What is Sæmi’s purpose?
Sæmi is a question-answering system that receives questions from users in voice or text format to provide them with relevant information.
Does Sæmi process personal information?
Personal information refers to any information that can be traced to a specific individual, such as name, ID number, address, phone number, email, network ID, image content, and more. Sæmi does not want users to provide personal information and makes no attempt to trace questions and answers to individual users. However, this doesn’t prevent users from voluntarily providing personal information, such as names and ID numbers.
On what legal basis does Sæmi process personal information?
All processing of personal information is based on Act No. 90/2018 on Data Protection and Processing of Personal Information (“Data Protection Act”). If a user voluntarily provides personal information, the processing is based on their consent, cf. Article 9, Paragraph 1 of the Data Protection Act.
How long does Sæmi store personal information?
Questions that users ask Sæmi in text format are stored to improve the system. If a question contains personal information, it is stored for a maximum of 10 days. All voice questions from users are deleted immediately. Verbal responses from Sæmi are deleted after 30 days.
Does Sæmi share personal information with third parties?
Sæmi uses third-party services that help it serve its purpose. Service providers may have access to personal information in connection with their services. A confidentiality agreement is made with the provider that stipulates their obligation to maintain complete confidentiality, ensure security, and only process personal information according to Sæmi’s instructions. Otherwise, information is under no circumstances shared with third parties.

Individuals have certain rights under data protection laws, such as the right to withdraw consent, access data, correct incorrect or misleading information, have personal information deleted, prevent processing of personal information, transfer their own data, and file complaints with the Icelandic Data Protection Authority (postur@personuvernd.is).

What is Símarómur?
Símarómur is an app that reads text from smartphone screens. Símarómur can connect with accessibility applications and other apps that can use system text-to-speech engines on iOS and Android smart devices.
Does Símarómur process personal information?
Personal information refers to any information that can be traced to a specific individual, such as name, ID number, address, phone number, email, network ID, image content, and more. Símarómur’s functionality, text reading, takes place entirely on the user’s device, and no read texts or audio files are sent from the device.
If users choose to allow Símarómur to send information about app functionality through “Improve Símarómur” on the information screen, information about errors and other standard statistical information, such as phone type, device number, and operating system version, are sent to processing services. Information from iOS devices is sent to our self-hosted Sentry server located in Europe, while information from Android devices is sent to Firebase (https://firebase.google.com/), a Google service. If users choose to send messages to Grammatek ehf through Símarómur’s messaging function, that information is handled the same way as the aforementioned device-related information.
Apple/Google send non-personally identifiable information, such as number of users and crash reports, regardless of whether the user has selected “Improve Símarómur” or not.
